Let the dog run on Kiama's off-leash headlands

Beyond Bombo and Jones Beach, Kiama has a string of grassy headlands where dogs can run off the lead. The closest to the apartments is Marsden Head, which Kiama Council describes as a popular off-leash area between Easts Beach and the Little Blowhole. Easts Beach is a 15-minute walk from your door, and the headland sits just beyond it.

Keep your dog on a lead on the way in and out, and carry bags. Destination Kiama lists these off-leash spots, starting with the closest:

Marsden Head (Marsden Point Reserve)

Tingira Crescent, Kiama

Off-leash headland between Easts Beach and the Little Blowhole, with unpaved walking tracks. Council lists the access near 41 Tingira Crescent.

Kaleula Head Reserve

Gwinganna Avenue, Kiama

Off-leash headland reached from Gwinganna Avenue. Marsden Head is a short walk south, so you can pair the two.

Minnamurra Headland

Eureka Avenue, Kiama Downs

Between Jones Beach and the mouth of the Minnamurra River, with access off Eureka Avenue. Pair it with the Jones Beach off-leash area.

Gerringong Headland and Werri Beach

Tasman Drive, Gerringong

An off-leash headland off Tasman Drive. Down on Werri Beach, off Pacific Avenue, dogs can run off the lead in the middle of the beach only, from sunrise to sunset, so follow the signs. Gerringong is about 10 minutes by car.

Black Head Reserve

Gerroa

Off-leash 24 hours a day, with access from Stafford Street or Headland Drive.

Know where dogs can't go

Kiama Council keeps dogs off beach sand and water everywhere except its signed off-leash areas, so save the swim for the off-leash stretches of Bombo, Jones and Werri beaches. Council also bans dogs, on or off the lead:

  • within 10 metres of playground equipment, public barbecues and kiosks
  • from public bathing areas
  • from sports fields while organised sport is on
  • from shopping areas, unless a business allows them
  • from park interiors, though the outside footpaths are fine
  • from the water areas of the Minnamurra River, and the water and sand of Crooked River

The Kiama Coast Walk is open to dogs on a lead for its full length of more than 20 km. Some beaches along it still exclude dogs, so follow the signs or use the street behind. For which sand is which, see our guide to Kiama beaches, and check Kiama Council's off-leash map before you go.

Eat out with the dog, or book a day of dog care

Destination Kiama says most cafés with outdoor seating welcome well-behaved dogs, and it names 19 in Kiama alone. Ask for an outside table and call ahead if you are a group. Drive down with your pet

Plan to drive. Transport for NSW doesn't allow pets on trains or at stations, so the South Coast line is out unless your dog is an accredited assistance animal. Kiama is about 1 hour 45 minutes from the Sydney CBD by car, and our Sydney to Kiama guide covers the route.

When you arrive, check in from 3pm and use the garage parking for two cars, so the dog, leads and beach towels go straight inside. Check-out is 10am.

If you are weighing up other options, the Kiama Coast Holiday Parks set their own pet rules. Werri Beach Holiday Park takes pets all year, while Kiama Harbour Cabins excludes NSW school holidays and Surf Beach, Kendalls on the Beach and Seven Mile Beach take pets on selected sites outside high season. Our apartments suit families and groups who want three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a full kitchen, and you can book more than one pet-friendly apartment on the same site.
