Start 2027 with the Kiama Show and summer at the beach

The year opens in the middle of the summer school holidays. If you are in town for New Year's Eve, the free Kiama NYE Sky Show on Thursday 31 December 2026 runs from 4pm at Kiama Harbour, with fireworks at 9pm. Read our Kiama New Year's Eve guide.

January: the 179th Kiama Show is on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 January 2027 at Kiama Showground, with cattle, horses, woodchop, the Pavilion, sideshow alley and fireworks. Day tickets go on sale online from 1 January. Australia Day follows on Tuesday 26 January with community barbecue breakfasts in Jamberoo, Gerringong and Kiama Downs and a citizenship ceremony at Gerringong Surf Club, according to Kiama Council.

For a cooler day, NSW National Parks runs a guided Fitzroy Falls Nature Tour on 4 and 18 January, just under an hour's drive away.

February: school is back from 28 January, so beaches quieten while the water stays warm. Bureau of Meteorology averages for Bombo Headland give highs of about 25°C in January and February. Under Kiama Council's 2026 to 2027 timetable, lifeguards patrol Easts Beach every day from 21 December to 31 January, then on weekends in February, and Surf Beach is patrolled every day until late April. Jamberoo Action Park is open on its listed days through summer, about 19 minutes' drive away.

Come in March for jazz, blues and Easter

The Kiama Jazz and Blues Festival returns on Friday 5 to Sunday 7 March 2027 for its 40th anniversary, after pausing in 2026. The organisers list venues across Kiama, Gerringong and Minnamurra. The program, artists and tickets have not been announced yet.

Clean Up Australia Day falls on the festival Sunday, 7 March, with Kiama Council collecting waste from registered clean-up sites.

Easter is early in 2027: Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday is 29 March. The four-day weekend comes two weeks before the April school holidays. The Kiama Seaside Markets run at Black Beach on the third Sunday of every month, from 9am to 3pm, and the Kiama Farmers' Market runs every Wednesday afternoon. The organisers had not listed 2027 dates yet.

Pack a light rain jacket. BOM records show February and March are usually the wettest months at Bombo, with short, heavy bursts. See Kiama weather by month.

Use the April school holidays and Anzac long weekend

The autumn school holidays run from Monday 12 to Friday 23 April 2027. Anzac Day is a Sunday, so NSW adds a public holiday on Monday 26 April, which gives one more long weekend straight after the holidays.

  • Last swims with lifeguards: under Kiama Council's 2026 to 2027 timetable, Surf Beach is patrolled on weekdays until 23 April and on weekends and public holidays until 25 April. Werri Beach also has patrols through the Easter school holidays, 12 to 23 April. Check BeachSafe on the day.
  • Last days at the water park: Jamberoo Action Park's 2026 to 2027 season ends on 26 April. Its next season dates have not been published yet.
  • Another falls walk: the Fitzroy Falls Nature Tour runs again on Tuesday 20 April.
  • Walking weather: Destination Kiama suggests autumn for the Kiama Coast Walk, with milder days than summer.

Watch for the first whales in May and June

Whale season starts in May. Destination Kiama and our whale watching in Kiama guide put the northern migration from late May to July, when humpbacks tend to swim further offshore. Head for the higher lookouts at Minnamurra, Gerringong and Black Head, and bring binoculars.

On Saturday 8 May 2027, Elite Energy hosts the Kiama Triathlon from James Oates Reserve on Charles Avenue, Minnamurra, from 8am to 4pm, according to Kiama Council.

The King's Birthday long weekend ends on Monday 14 June. By then, BOM averages show highs of about 18°C and nights near 11°C. Crowds are lower, so pair a lookout morning with lunch from our Kiama pubs guide.

Rug up for the July school holidays and winter waterfalls

The winter school holidays run from Monday 5 to Friday 16 July 2027. July is the coolest month, with BOM averages of about 17°C by day and 10°C at night, and July and August bring the most clear days in the long-term record.

  • Waterfalls after rain: Minnamurra Falls in Budderoo National Park is about 25 minutes' drive (18 km) from the apartments, and Carrington Falls about 40 minutes. Check NSW National Parks alerts before you go. See waterfalls near Kiama.
  • Fitzroy Falls Nature Tour: Thursday 15 July, during the school holidays.
  • Winter Street Festival: 2027 date not yet announced. In 2026 it ran on Saturday 11 July on Terralong Street. Destination Kiama says it aims to hold a winter event each year when funding allows, though the format may change.
  • Ceramics: the South Coast Ceramics Market is on Sunday 22 August 2027 at The Co-Op Gerringong, 10am to 3pm, with more than 50 local makers.

Monday 2 August is the NSW Bank Holiday, which is not a public holiday. For more cold-weather ideas, read things to do in Kiama in winter.

See the whale calves head south in spring

From September to November, humpbacks swim back south, and mothers with new calves often come closer to shore. That makes Blowhole Point, Kiama Harbour and Bombo Headland worth a look as well as the whale platforms. September is the driest month on average at Bombo.

The spring school holidays run from Monday 27 September to Friday 8 October 2027, and Labour Day falls on Monday 4 October, in the middle of the break. Expect a busy fortnight.

Several spring events have not published 2027 dates yet:

  • Beach patrols: the 2027 to 2028 timetable is not out. The 2026 to 2027 season started on 26 September at Surf Beach.
  • Jamberoo Action Park: the 2026 to 2027 season opened on 26 September 2026. The next season's dates had not been announced.
  • Kiama Culture Fest: dates not yet announced. In 2026 it was held on Saturday 10 October in Hindmarsh Park.
  • Kiama Picnic Train: no 2027 trips listed. In 2026 the steam train ran to Kiama in July, August, October and November.
  • Pavilion Annual Twilight Market: dates not yet announced. In 2026 it was held on Friday 27 November.

Finish 2027 with the summer holidays and Christmas

Term 4 ends on Monday 20 December 2027, and the summer school holidays run from Tuesday 21 December 2027 to Friday 28 January 2028 in the Eastern division. Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on a weekend, so NSW adds public holidays on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December.

The date and format for Kiama's New Year's Eve 2027 has not been announced yet. The 2026 show only returned after a community fundraising campaign. Watch the Destination Kiama NYE page and our New Year's Eve guide.

December averages a high of about 24°C. The harbour is about a 33-minute walk (2.7 km) from Kiama Ridge Waters, which saves the hunt for a park on a busy night. Our Kiama parking guide covers the rest.

Book school holiday and long weekend stays early
