12 Kiama playgrounds for a family week, from town to Jamberoo

The main Kiama playground is Hindmarsh Park on Terralong Street, rebuilt in 2024 with sand and water play, an inclusive trampoline and an accessible carousel. For a beach day, Coronation Park at Surf Beach and Kendalls Point Reserve have shaded playgrounds by the sand. Hillview Circuit Park is a 7-minute walk from Kiama Ridge Waters.

Kiama Council looks after more than 20 playgrounds across the municipality, from the big inclusive park in the town centre to small neighbourhood parks tucked between houses. For a family staying a week, that means a different one most days, each paired with a beach, an ocean pool or a town to explore.

From Kiama Ridge Waters, at 2 Surfleet Place on the quiet southern side of town, the closest playground is a short stroll away, the beachside ones are a 20-minute walk or a 3-minute drive, and the playgrounds in Gerringong, Kiama Downs and Jamberoo are 8 to 13 minutes by car. Features below come from each park's Kiama Council page. Walk and drive times are from the apartments.

None of the Council listings mention fencing, so treat every playground as unfenced and keep an eye on runners near roads and car parks.

Start next door at Hillview Circuit Park

Hillview Circuit Park, also called Frogs Hollow, sits on the corner of Hillview Circuit and South Kiama Drive. It is the closest playground to Kiama Ridge Waters, about a 7-minute walk (0.5 km), so it's the one to reach for on arrival day when everyone needs to stretch their legs after the drive.

Kiama Council describes a playground, a large grassy area for running around and shaded picnic tables for lunch outdoors. The Council page does not list toilets or a barbecue, so pack snacks and plan a quick trip home if needed. It's a neighbourhood park, quieter than the town playgrounds, and a good choice for an early morning play before the beach.

Walk to Whitton Place Reserve on the way to Easts Beach

Whitton Place Reserve runs from Whitton Place through to Tombonda Drive, and Kiama Council notes it's a short walk to Easts Beach and the Little Blowhole. From the apartments it's about 16 minutes on foot (1.2 km), so it slots neatly into a morning walk.

Council lists a playground and shade, with seating and a grassed play area. There are no toilets on the listing. Pair it with Easts Beach, where the shallow Munna Munnora Creek at the southern end is a favourite paddling spot for little ones, or the Little Blowhole on a north-east swell.

Kendalls Point Reserve is off Bourrool Street at the northern end of the Surf Beach Holiday Park, with views over Surf Beach and across to Kiama Lighthouse. Kiama Council lists a playground, shade areas, picnic tables, outdoor gym equipment and paved walking tracks, and its introduction mentions a barbecue as well.

It's about a 19-minute walk (1.5 km) or a 2-minute drive from the apartments. Kendalls Beach is right there: Destination Kiama says its shallow water and gentle waves suit young children and less confident swimmers. Toilets are not on the Council listing for the reserve itself, so plan for that with toddlers.

Spend a beach afternoon at Coronation Park

Coronation Park is at 74 Manning Street, on the grass beside Surf Beach, Kiama's main surf beach. Kiama Council describes a large shaded playground, undercover picnic areas and open lawn, and lists toilets including an accessible toilet, a barbecue, showers, outdoor gym equipment, beach volleyball and a rotunda. The beach is patrolled in summer, according to Council.

It's a 23-minute walk (1.9 km) or a 3-minute drive from Kiama Ridge Waters. On Wednesday afternoons the Kiama Farmers' Market sets up here, 3pm to 6pm in daylight saving time and 2pm to 5pm the rest of the year, so the kids can play while you buy dinner. Check times before you go.

Hindmarsh Park at 107 Terralong Street is the big one, Kiama's main town playground. Council finished a $4.5 million upgrade in September 2024. Its equipment list includes:

  • climbing towers with rope bridges, slides and a climbing wall
  • an inclusive trampoline and an inclusive seesaw
  • pod, basket and baby swings
  • an accessible carousel and an accessible musical marimba
  • sand and water play
  • toddler springers, a crawling tunnel, stepping stones and a sensory trail

Council also lists toilets with an accessible toilet, shade areas, picnic shelters, a barbecue and a drinking fountain. It's a 33-minute walk (2.7 km) or 4-minute drive from Kiama Ridge Waters, in the middle of town, so coffee, lunch and ice cream are steps away. Our Kiama cafes guide has ideas.

Blowhole Point Reserve wraps around the Kiama Blowhole, the Lighthouse and the Visitor Information Centre. Kiama Council lists a playground, toilets and an accessible toilet, change rooms, showers, a barbecue, undercover picnic tables and outdoor gym equipment, with the Blowhole Point rock pool a short walk away.

It's about a 35-minute walk (2.9 km) or a 5-minute drive from the apartments. Watch the Kiama Blowhole first, then let the kids play while you sit with a coffee. Keep little ones behind the railings on the rock shelf.

Waabie Reserve, also called Big Fig Park, is on Greyleigh Drive at the corner of Bland Street, in the residential streets west of the town centre. Kiama Council describes a spider web climbing tower, a small activity platform and a large grassy play area, all shaded by a big fig tree, plus picnic tables including undercover ones.

It's about a 5-minute drive (2.7 km) from Kiama Ridge Waters. No toilets are listed, so it suits a short play with a picnic rather than a whole afternoon.

Gainsborough Chase Reserve spans both sides of Thornett Way in Kiama Downs, about a 10-minute drive (8.3 km) north of the apartments. Kiama Council lists a shaded playground, a BMX track, a free basketball court, a cricket pitch, undercover picnic tables, toilets and paved walking tracks.

With bikes, scooters and a ball, this is an easy half day for school-age kids. Council's page can show a caution status for the reserve, so look at it before you drive up.

South Werri Reserve is behind Gerringong Surf Club off Pacific Avenue, about an 8-minute drive (7.7 km) south. Kiama Council lists a children's playground, a skate park, a large grassy play area, toilets, a barbecue, undercover picnic tables and a kiosk.

Werri Beach is across the road, and the South Werri ocean pool has a separate children's wading pool, according to Destination Kiama. It's a full morning in one stop. Our Gerringong guide covers the rest of the village.

Old School Park, also called Gerringong Park, is at 110 Fern Street next to Gerringong Town Hall, in the middle of the village. Kiama Council describes a fully shaded playground with large grassy areas, and lists toilets, an accessible toilet and picnic tables.

The full shade makes it a smart pick on a hot summer afternoon. It's about an 8-minute drive (8.2 km) from the apartments, and Fern Street's cafes are a short walk away: see Gerringong cafes and restaurants.

Reid Park on Allowrie Street is in the centre of Jamberoo, about a 13-minute drive (11.5 km) inland. Kiama Council describes a playground, a water play area and a rotunda, and lists a skate park, toilets with an accessible toilet, a barbecue, undercover picnic tables, shade and a water fountain.

A fire destroyed most of the play equipment in November 2024. Council replaced it, and its project page shows the repairs completed in March 2025. Make a day of it with our Jamberoo guide.

Pair each playground with a beach or ocean pool

The beachside playgrounds turn a play into a whole morning. Here's how they line up:

  • Kendalls Point Reserve: Kendalls Beach, the gentle beach for young children.
  • Coronation Park: Surf Beach, patrolled in summer, with showers in the park.
  • Black Beach foreshore: the 50 m Continental Pool.
  • Blowhole Point Reserve: the Blowhole Point rock pool, with a shallow wading area off to the side.
  • South Werri Reserve: Werri Beach and the South Werri children's wading pool.

Swim between the red and yellow flags, and check BeachSafe for patrol times before you go. Ocean pools take waves at high tide and in big swell, so skip them on rough days. Our Kiama beaches guide covers each beach in more detail.

Keep a rainy-day backup ready

Most of these playgrounds have shade but no cover, so a wet day needs a plan B. The Kiama Leisure Centre at 1 Havilah Place is Council's indoor pool, with a heated toddler pool alongside the 25 m lap pool, about a 5-minute drive from the apartments. Destination Kiama also points families to its giant inflatable pool toy, which runs all year.

The undercover picnic tables at Coronation Park, Blowhole Point, Gainsborough Chase and South Werri help in a passing shower. For longer wet spells, our guide to rainy day things to do in Kiama lists museums, the library, pottery and more, with opening hours.

Plan a family week around the playgrounds

Curved garden path with palms between the Kiama Ridge Waters buildings at dusk

A week gives you time to try a new playground most days without long drives. One way to do it:

  1. Arrival day: Hillview Circuit Park, a 7-minute walk, while someone unpacks.
  2. Beach morning: Kendalls Beach and Kendalls Point Reserve.
  3. Town day: Hindmarsh Park, lunch in town, then the Blowhole.
  4. Wednesday: Surf Beach, Coronation Park and the Farmers' Market for dinner.
  5. Gerringong day: South Werri Reserve and the beach, then Old School Park in the afternoon shade.
  6. Inland day: Reid Park in Jamberoo with a rainforest walk or Jamberoo Action Park.
  7. Last morning: Whitton Place Reserve and a paddle at Easts Beach.

Come home to room for the prams, scooters and wet towels at Kiama Ridge Waters. Each of our three-bedroom apartments sleeps six, with two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a laundry and garage parking for two cars.
